Gov. Wolf Renews Call to Legislature to Pass Universal Background Checks

first_imgGov. Wolf Renews Call to Legislature to Pass Universal Background Checks Press Release,  Public Safety Harrisburg, PA – Governor Tom Wolf has frequently urged the legislature to pass commonsense gun safety laws, including universal background checks by eliminating the gun show loophole on private transactions for long guns.“We must pass legislation that requires all those who wish to purchase a firearm to go through a State Police background check,” Governor Wolf said. “Universal background checks are one of the best ways we can keep weapons out of the hands of dangerous individuals. We put our communities at risk by allowing individuals to buy long guns, including AR-15s, through private transactions without a background check.”Later today, Governor Wolf will join CeaseFirePA, gun violence survivors, trauma surgeons, and gun violence reduction advocates at the Capitol Rotunda to call for more commonsense gun laws, including universal background checks.“We have a lot of work left to do at the state and federal levels to address gun violence and keep people safe. But there is support from Republicans and Democrats for commonsense gun safety, including universal background checks,” Gov. Wolf said. “Earlier this year, I signed the first major gun safety bill in decades in Pennsylvania. Many of those here today championed this bill. It proved that commonsense gun safety reform can pass in Pennsylvania.”CeaseFirePA organized the rally to remind returning Pennsylvania lawmakers that the organization is not satisfied with the lack of legislation to reduce gun violence and make our communities safer.“We are calling on the legislature to build on the success of last year and take up and pass more bills that will keep guns away from those who should not have them and make PA safer,” said Shira Goodman, Executive Director CeaseFirePA. “We can’t afford to wait, and the people are counting on Harrisburg to act.”In addition to Shira Goodman, speakers included Dr. Zoe Maher, a trauma surgeon from Temple University Hospital in Philadelphia; Dr. Raquel Forsythe, a trauma surgeon from the University of Pittsburgh; Diana and Charles Reynolds, who lost a child to gun violence; and Jo Schlesinger, whose ex-husband was injured in the Tree of Life Synagogue shooting in October 2018. first_imgExxonMobil said the size of the natural gas resource at the P’nyang field in Papua New Guinea is 84 percent higher than previously assessed in 2012.Following a new independent recertification study by Netherland Sewell and Associates and the January completion of the P’nyang South-2 well, located in the Western Province of Papua New Guinea, the resource estimates rose to 4.36 trillion cubic feet of gas.ExxonMobil said the results underpin the three-train expansion concept for the PNG LNG plant near Port Moresby, with one new train dedicated to gas from the P’nyang and PNG LNG fields and two trains dedicated to gas associated with the Papua LNG project.“We are working closely with our joint venture partners and the government to progress the P’nyang field development proposal and secure the licenses needed to develop this world-class resource,” Liam Mallon, president of ExxonMobil Development Company. The development concept, which would add approximately 8 million tons of LNG annually, would double the capacity of the existing LNG plant operated by ExxonMobil.“This investment would extend our gas pipeline infrastructure into the country’s Western Province,” Mallon said. The P’nyang field is located within petroleum retention license 3, which covers 105,000 acres. ExxonMobil units operate the license with a 49 percent interest in the block. Units of Oil Search have a 38.5 percent interest and JX Nippon has 12.5 percent interest.Papua LNG is seeking to commercialize the Elk-Antelope fields located in petroleum retention license 15 in the Gulf Province of Papua New Guinea. An ExxonMobil unit holds 37.1 percent interest, and units of the operator Total and Oil Search have 40.1 percent and 22.8 percent interest, respectively.last_img read more

first_imgRelatedPostsNo Content Available Lille striker, Victor Osimhen, has emerged as an injury doubt ahead of Nigeria’s upcoming 2021 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Benin and Lesotho. The number seven had to be substituted in the 58th minute of Lille’s 3-0 win over Bordeaux in the Ligue 1 on Saturday and will undergo further tests in the coming days to determine if he faces a spell on the sidelines.Initially Osimhen has been diagnosed with an adductor injury in his left thigh and it could take a minimum of two weeks before he returns to action.Speaking at a post-match press conference, Lille coach Christophe Galtier provided an update on Osimhen: “He has adductor pain. It can be a hassle. He already had a pain before. We knew that risk was high.“This morning (Saturday), I asked him if he could play and he told me he felt good. I was going to take him out but I do not know. We’ll see in the week how it’s going to be. What the exams that will be done will say.”The 20-year-old received his Ligue 1 Player of the Month for September trophy before the start of the game against Bordeaux.Osimhen has scored eight goals in 13 starts for Lille in all competitions this season.—  Dotun OladipoManaging Editor/CEOPremium Eagle Media Limited(Publishers of The Eagle Online)27, Joseph Odunlami Street, off Thomas Salako Street, Ogba. Perfect 10 for super Sacre

first_img Henderson said: “Job done. Barry said he was at his best at Cheltenham, not as sharp at Aintree and not as sharp today. To do all three (Cheltenham, Aintree and Punchestown) is very, very hard and he’s had to work harder today than he has in the past. He can’t quite jump out of this ground as easily as if it was good. “He didn’t do anything wrong, he was clean and clinical, and fair play to Sizing Europe, who ran a hell of a race. I hope everyone has enjoyed seeing him, that’s why we’re here. We love coming. Ireland is a nation of horse lovers and you feel you owe it to everybody to bring him here. “There’s no point leaving him at home and the reception and appreciation he got was very, very special.” Geraghty added: “Sizing Europe put it up to us today and I had to work hard. Heavy ground probably doesn’t suit my lad as well and from four out it wasn’t as easy as it has been elsewhere, but we still put it to bed. “I’d say there was more tension today than there was in Cheltenham. Just the crowd – the amount of people that were here for one horse was massive and the parade ring was 20-deep, and there were cheers on the way out. “It was the ‘Bieber’ effect when we were in the winner’s enclosure all right, brilliant, more so than when we were in Cheltenham because I think the Irish really love to see him here.” Henry de Bromhead was rightly proud of Sizing Europe’s terrific performance in defeat and said: “He was superb. I said to Andrew to go and throw the kitchen sink at your man (Sprinter Sacre) and we got him off the bridle, but he’s an incredible horse. At least we saw Barry having to push him out today.” Nicky Henderson’s superstar, sent off the 1-9 favourite, was made to work harder than usual as admirable veteran Sizing Europe set out to make all under Andrew Lynch and refused to give in when challenged for the lead at the second-last fence. Sprinter Sacre, who travelled well throughout, held the advantage at the last and then responded well to Barry Geraghty’s urgings to clear away for victory by five and a half lengths in front of an appreciative crowd. Pulisic double inspires U.S. 6-0 rout of St Vincent and the Grenadines

first_img(REUTERS) – United States teenage substitute Christian Pulisic scored a second-half double in a 6-0 rout of St Vincent and the Grenadines as they moved to the verge of the final CONCACAF World Cup qualifying round yesterday.Three first-half goals had put the result beyond doubt, though the visitors were exposed several times defensively by the plucky team from the small Caribbean island nation of barely 100 000 people.German-based Bobby Wood opened the scoring in the 28th minute when he curled a shot into the far corner from just outside the box at the Arnos Vale cricket ground in Kingstown.Matt Besler’s strike and a Jozy Altidore penalty extended the lead before halftime in breezy conditions.St Vincent had the ball in the net twice early in the second half, but were offside on both occasions.Seventeen-year-old Pulisic then showed his class after coming off the bench. The Borussia Dortmund striker scored his first goal after collecting a pass with a deft touch inside the box and completed the win in stoppage time when he was given too much time just outside the box and placed the ball clinically inside the post.Sacha Kljestan also scored for the U.S., who are poised to reach the so-called Hexagonal, or final stage, of CONCACAF qualifying. The U.S. have 10 points from five matches, with one game left in the stage. The six teams that qualify for the Hexagonal will play each other home and away, with the top three advancing to the 2018 World Cup in Russia.last_img read more

After Failed World Cup Bid Nigeria Plot to Stage AWCON

| zzsnk

first_imgThe Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) is set to put the country forward as a potential host for next year’s continental showpiece event, the African Women Nations Cup tournament (AWCON).Early last month, South Africa, another emerging power-house in women football, turned down an approach to step in as emergency hosts of the 2020 tournament after Congo-Brazzaville pulled out of the hosting of the 12-team gathering in July. With the Confederation of African Football (CAF) now in a race against time to find a country to hold the tournament, Opera News reports that Nigeria’s football governing body’s board has commenced work to see if a bid is feasible. Nigeria failed with a bid – fronted by NFF President Amaju Pinnick – to host the 2020 FIFA Women’s Under-20 World Cup.Costa Rica and Panama were instead announced as joint hosts by FIFA, after Pinnick admitted challenges with the West African country’s inability to fulfill all requirements proposed by the world governing body FIFA at short notice. The NFF has been on a collision course with Sports Minister, Sunday Dare, whose support they would need to secure government guarantee. The body was strongly criticised by the Sports Minister during its Annual General Meeting (AGM) last week in Edo State over corruption in the governing of football as well as the slide in the country’s fortunes in the beautiful game.“In the eyes of the Nigerian public, the perception that the NFF and Nigerian football is corrupt is rife. I have had cause in the past to speak on how perception is everything and the perception around the NFF is not one that will court new partners and sponsors for the federation,” the minister stated in his welcome address.“Even, though, many of the allegations have not been proven, the atmosphere around football is polluted on account of the negative perception of corruption and we must move quickly to sanitise this.”With Nigeria suffering through an economic crisis, strong criticism from a section of the country’s socio-political commentators and analysts beset the botched bid to stage the women’s global youth event.Despite the criticism, the Under-20 World Cup project received strong backing from the Nigerian government with Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo insisting they were fully behind the plans.“The Government of Nigeria guarantees to back the bid 100 per cent,” Osinbajo said during a FIFA inspection visit in August.“We are actually excited with the prospect of hosting the FIFA Under-20 Women’s World Cup in 2020.“For us, football is a unifying force. Government interest in hosting is beyond commercial; football is a measure of unity and well-being of our people as diverse as we are.”The last major tournament played in Nigeria was the 2009 FIFA Under-17 World Cup, 10 years after the country hosted the Under-20 version. However, defending champions Nigeria have previously hosted and won the AWCON in 1998, 2002 and 2006.It will now decide whether to rescue the continent’s women showpiece event one more time, with games potentially staged in Lagos, Benin City, Asaba and Uyo.There has been no dates set for the 2020 women’s Africa Cup of Nations but it is usually held in the second half of the year. The last final – won by Nigeria – was in Ghana.Six nations have hosted the tournament since it switched to the recent format in 1998, Nigeria and South Africa have both staged it thrice, Equatorial Guinea (twice), Namibia, Cameroon and Ghana.Nigeria’s women are the most successful national team in African football history with NINE continental titles – two more than Egypt’s men’s team. The Super Falcons are the only African team to have played in all of the Women’s eight World Cup tournaments since 1991 but they have failed to translate their continental dominance on the world stage.Their best performance came when reaching the quarter-finals in 1999 and 20 years later when they exit in the second round of the 2019 tournament in France.Share this:FacebookRedditTwitterPrintPinterestEmailWhatsAppSkypeLinkedInTumblrPocketTelegramlast_img read more

USC ROTC sees rise in enrollment

| zzsnk

first_imgUSC’s Reserve Officer Training Corps programs have seen a dramatic jump in enrollment this fall, a rise that some attribute to the stalled economy.According to James Wise, the enrollment and scholarship officer for the USC Army ROTC, the freshmen Army ROTC class has more than doubled compared to last year.Sound off · Colin Bunn, a freshman majoring in aerospace engineering, practices the low crawl during the Naval Reserve – Tim Tran | Daily Trojan The other branches of the ROTC — Naval and Air Force — have also noticed a similar jump. Lt. Scott Carr of the Naval ROTC said that program has seen an increase in the number of students who join the ROTC after coming to USC. Carr said there has been about a 25 to 35 percent increase among those students. The state of the economy has some believing that finances may be the reason for the number of applicants.“I’m sure a lot of it is because of the economy,” Carr said. “And USC is an expensive school.”There can be immediate financial benefits to joining ROTC, as both the Army and Navy program offer full-tuition scholarships. Still, Carr said the scholarships are only added incentive for individuals already interested in joining the military, and that scholarships alone would drive students to join ROTC.“Students who have a desire to serve their country find the NROTC scholarship very attractive,” Carr said. “It provides a means to completing a degree and the opportunity to serve as a commissioned officer in the United States Navy or Marine Corps.”There are also long-term benefits to membership in the program. Students who graduate from college and complete an ROTC program are able to start off at a management level, or an officer in some cases, when they enter the military.Because of the guaranteed job placement, it is typical for ROTC enrollment numbers to go up when the economy is in a rut, according to Michael Keane, an assistant professor of clinical finance at the Marshall School of Business.“It’s not unusual to find that in a recession, people will find job opportunities in the military to be more attractive,” Keane said. But Commanding Officer Robert Huntley, a professor for Army ROTC, said there are other possible reasons for the increase in the number of applicants.“There’s a lot more recognition about the military … People are looking to serve the government and one of the ways is to join the military,” Huntley said,Kevin Rohrberg, a junior majoring in history and political science, joined the Air Force ROTC his freshman year.He said the economy might be the reason there’s been an increase in the number of students in the ROTC.“One cool thing the ROTC has is that you have a guaranteed job [after graduating],” Rohrberg said. “It’s a great job security and it’s good pay.”Rohrberg also has a partial scholarship from the Air Force ROTC to help him pay for tuition. But neither the economy nor the extra money was the primary reason he joined.“It’s always been my dream to serve the country,” said Rohrberg. “It wasn’t the main reason. I mean, it obviously helps but it wasn’t my defining factor for joining.”Whatever the reason for the increase in applicants, the higher level of interest has given USC’s ROTC program a chance to be more selective.Though Wise said the program is currently able to accept as many or as few students as it wants, the larger pool of applicants gives it more freedom to pick and choose.“We have a leeway to be more selective in what we’re looking for and who we want to be a part of our program,” Wise said.Despite the economy, the Naval ROTC and Army ROTC have yet to experience any serious budget cuts for scholarships.“We’ve been asked to continue to remain fiscally responsible and to look for ways to continue to improve our systems,” said Carr. “But we haven’t seen any scholarship cutbacks.”Wise said the Army ROTC scholarship program has also remained consistent. Currently, students can be awarded full-tuition scholarships when they enter the Army ROTC.The Army ROTC program is not currently very competitive, Wise said, but it has been in the past and could be again.“We’ve had a scholarship program that’s been effective,” said Wise. “But I think that in the next three or five years, you’re going to see that full-tuition scholarship money become more competitive.”last_img read more

first_imgReports indicate that Cameroon have been stripped of the rights to host the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).The hosting of the AFCON was part of the agenda in the Confederation of African Football (CAF) Extraordinary Executive Committee meeting held in Accra, Ghana yesterday. Two reports that were central to the final decision regarding Cameroon were to be tabled namely; report of inspection visits of the security committee from October 27 to November 1 as well as a report of the inspection visit from November 11-15. In October, CAF President Ahmad Ahmad visited Yaounde for a meeting with Cameroon President Paul Biya just days after CAF deferred the final decision on the hosting of next year’s AFCON.At that time, a report by the last inspection team to Cameroon revealed: “a significant delay as far as the delivery of infrastructure is concerned.”Cameroon’s hosting of African football’s showpiece event has been in jeopardy for months since the decision to increase the tournament from 16 to 24 teams.CAF will now give a one month window where countries interested in hosting the tournament will submit their official bids.Morocco, who unsuccessfully bid for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, are likely to replace Cameroon as hosts. South Africa, hosts of the 2010 World Cup, could also be considered. This will be the second time in recent times that CAF has stripped a country of hosting rights of a continental tourney. Kenya was declared unfit to host the Africa Nations Championships (CHAN) in January this year. Morocco replaced Kenya as hosts.Share this:FacebookRedditTwitterPrintPinterestEmailWhatsAppSkypeLinkedInTumblrPocketTelegramlast_img read more
