Talking Horses: the best bets for Ludlow and the Prix Djebel in France

first_imgShare on LinkedIn Since you’re here… Talking Horses Share on Twitter Support The Guardian This year’s race was relocated to Deauville from its familiar home at Maisons-Laffitte as long ago as mid‑February, after the Seine broke its banks and flooded the Parisian track earlier in the winter. The switch has had no effect on the standard of the field, however, as it includes the unbeaten colt Sacred Life, currently a 20-1 chance for the 2,000 Guineas on 5 May.Sacred Life was denied a run at Group One level at the end of his juvenile season when the Critérium International at Saint-Cloud on 29 October was abandoned after a group of trainers, owners and breeders protesting about a proposed cut in payments from France Galop, their governing body, blocked the entrance to the parade ring.Stephane Wattel’s runner would have been a live contender for that race, having won his second and third starts – including the Group Three Thomas Bryon – by a combined total of 11 lengths. His six-length win on soft ground in the Bryon suggests he will cope with heavy going this afternoon, while Cardsharp, from Mark Johnston’s stable in Yorkshire, is an interesting opponent for Sacred Life this afternoon as his form last year included a defeat of U S Navy Flag, the subsequent Middle Park and Dewhurst winner, in the July Stakes at Newmarket.Sacred Life could well emerge as a very credible contender for the Guineas after today’s trial, which is due off at 1.50. On the domestic cards, meanwhile, Sonneofpresenting (2.50) could be worth a small interest when he makes his first start since October on the card at Ludlow. High on Hops: Experimental Hop Varieties

first_img Get to Know 6 New Types of Beer Hops Editors’ Recommendations Guinness Shoots For the Moon With a New Beer Hops and Terroir: Why the Beer World is Embracing the Wine Term After you’ve sampled enough beer, you start to pay close attention to things like hops. For drinkers consumed with getting the most hop bite possible, researching International Bitterness Units (IBUs) becomes a religion. That’s an easy enough road to travel. But for those looking to understand the more subtle aromatic or flavor profiles available from hops, knowing the individual hop varietal names becomes important. The old standbys of Willamette, Cascade and Saaz are still around, each providing mild bases for all-purpose brewing. As palates for more extreme flavors have grown, the rise of new, trendy hops like Citra, Galaxy and Falconer’s Flight have come to the fore. But even these fairly recent hop creations are already being edged out by experimental hops so new they don’t even have proper names yet.Hop Breeding Company is making many of these new strains available directly to home brewers and commercial breweries alike. Recognized by its use of the “HBC” prefix, these hops are re-creating favorite varieties with new twists and forging new profiles. “HBC 342” is a dual usage hop that addresses aroma and flavor by infusing citrus notes like melon and mango. In the United Kingdom, Charles Faram Hop Merchants is similarly looking to crack the code on new hop creations. Named using the “CF” prefix, these hops are bringing the stalwart hop producer, in business since 1865, into the modern age. CF103 (or Duchess) is prominently showcased in Eden Brewery’s Antifreeze for floral, pepper and spicy notes.Sierra Nevada has been bringing experimental hops to the masses with its Harvest : Newly Developed Hop IPA. This beer allows the seasoned craft brewery to test out fresh flavors and hopping techniques against a large sample group. The hops in this release, listed only as 472, 05256, 431, and 06300 bring in a multitude of complementary sensations such as cedar, coconut, chocolate and orange.Related Post: Best Chocolate BeersDeschutes’ Hop Henge IPA utilizes newcomers Millennium, Mandarina Bavaria and still-numbered hops into a brew brimming with fleshy orange sweetness, grapefruit bitterness and a cracker-malt base.As with any new endeavor, trial and error will play in to whether any of these new, experimental hop varieties will become mainstream. But with the continued growth in craft beer, differentiating brews by use of new hops will be a big trend as breweries attempt to push the flavor envelope. first_imgzoom Australia’s Port of Brisbane has welcomed its first 8500 TEU class container vessel into the port, the Maersk Lloyd Don Carlos.Port of Brisbane Pty Ltd (PBPL) CEO, Roy Cummins, said this was a significant milestone in the Port of Brisbane’s ongoing work to optimise its navigational channel and ensure Brisbane was able to safely handle the larger container vessels and bulk carriers of the future.“As vessels increase in size and demand grows for Australian ports to take these larger vessels, PBPL has taken a firm view that in the future, Port of Brisbane will never be the limiting factor on the east coast of Australia,” said Cummins.“Far from being the limiting factor this confirms that, under certain tidal conditions, Port of Brisbane is able to accommodate 8500teu vessels. This is a very positive outcome for our customers, exporters and the Queensland economy more broadly. As the international freight task continues to grow, we are beginning to receive requests to handle 8500teu vessels. The arrival of the Lloyd Don Carlos has provided real-time information to help us calibrate the future requirements of Port of Brisbane’s navigational channel.”Port of Brisbane worked with key stakeholders including Maritime Safety Queensland, Brisbane Marine Pilots, Maersk and Patrick Terminals, while using underwater keel clearance technology to inform the early simulation exercises and the vessel’s actual arrival/departure.The 8533TEU Maersk vessel exchanged approximately 700 containers, discharging empty refrigerated containers and loading chickpea container exports. The ship berthed at Patrick Terminals while in port.During its time at the Port of Brisbane, PBPL presented the captain of the vessel with a plaque to commemorate its maiden voyage.Port of Brisbane facilitates the majority of Queensland’s international containerised trade and in 2015/16, the port’s container trade grew to more than 1.14 million TEUs, led by full import containers which grew 1.7% on the previous year.last_img read more

She was found several hours later.Charles, who was 19 when he was charged and has also been identified as Jarrod Charles, entered his pleas during a pre-trial conference on Dec. 15.A Gladue report — which examines an offender’s Indigenous background before a sentence is determined — has been requested.A date for a sentencing hearing is to be set on Feb. 23.Police said at the time of the girl’s disappearance that a man had been seen talking to her against a school wall before he grabbed her, put her into the back seat of his car and drove away. After the arrest, police said the girl was dropped off in a wooded area outside the city. They said she walked from the woods to a nearby farm where the owner called authorities.Police said a canine unit followed the girl’s footsteps back to the woods to figure out where she had been abandoned. It wasn’t revealed how far she had walked or how long she had been on her own. While police were at the farmyard, they received a call from a business in Prince Albert saying there was someone matching the suspect’s description. The girl’s mother has said what happened to her daughter shows it could happen to anyone. She said the girl was in the care of her grandmother, who had stepped away for a few minutes to get a bottle of water. The girl was well-educated about kidnapping, her mother said.(CTV Saskatoon, The Canadian Press)last_img read more

Overhaul needed to keep panCanadian health organizations relevant report

first_imgOTTAWA – A new report is recommending a dramatic overhaul to the role the federal government and its arms-length organizations play in the Canadian health-care system. An external review has found what it calls serious gaps and overlaps in the eight federally funded health organizations tasked with providing consistency and direction across Canada’s health-care system — a shortfall that it says is impossible to fix without retooling.Ottawa has created eight pan-Canadian health organizations over the past three decades in response to a variety of nationwide health needs, including the Mental Health Commission of Canada and the Canadian Centre on Substance Use and Addiction. The authors of today’s report say while the organizations may have played important roles in getting the health-care system to where it is today, change is needed to bring Canada into the 21st century. In particular, the report says, changes will be necessary to accommodate the federal government’s plan to develop a national pharmacare program, as well as to take advantage of big data to improve health delivery and outcomes. The report also recommends phasing out some of the organizations, in part because they may be too small to have an adequate impact or because the health-care context has changed enough that they aren’t as effective now as when they were originally created.last_img read more

The so-called Quartet, comprising the UN, the European Union, Russia and the United States, were following up on a strategy they launched last month to bring the two sides together again following the breakdown in bilateral talks last year, barely weeks after they had started again. Those efforts involve a series of steps and a timetable with the aim of reaching a lasting Middle East peace agreement by the end of next year, with today’s separate meetings being the first phase to agree on the agenda and method for negotiations.“Both parties expressed their readiness to engage with the Quartet, on the basis of its statement of 23 September, to overcome the current obstacles and resume direct bilateral negotiations without delay or preconditions,” the Quartet envoys said in a news release after the meetings, which were also attended by Quartet Representative Tony Blair, the former United Kingdom prime minister.“The parties agreed with the Quartet to come forward with comprehensive proposals on territory and security within three months in the context of our shared commitment to the objective of direct negotiations leading toward an agreement by the end of 2012.” The Quartet reiterated its call to the parties to refrain from provocative actions if negotiations are to be effective and agreed with the parties to meet regularly for the next 90 days to review progress. The Quartet has for years been championing the so-called Roadmap, the internationally approved plan for a two-State solution in which Israel and the Palestinians can live side by side in peace and security. Israel has called on the Palestinians to resume bilateral talks without conditions but Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas says he will not return to the table until Israel freezes all settlement activity in occupied Palestinian territory. 26 October 2011The United Nations and its diplomatic partners in the search for peace in the Middle East met separately today with Israeli and Palestinian officials in Jerusalem, with both sides agreeing to come forward with comprehensive proposals on territory and security within three months. read more

Army commander Lieutenant General Crishanthe De Silva today denied claims that former LTTE cadres who were rehabilitated after the war had been injected with poison. The commander insisted there was no evidence to back the claims and so the claims were baseless. The Government had said earlier it is prepared to investigate the allegations that former LTTE cadres were injected with poison if the details of such former LTTE cadres is submitted to the relevant authorities.Minister of National Dialogue Mano Ganeshan said this week that there is no need for Wigneswaran to take the issue to the international community as it can be investigated locally. (Colombo Gazette) The issue was later discussed at the Northern Provincial Council and Northern Province Chief Minister C V Wigneswaran was to meet Prime Minister Ranul Wickremeinghe to discuss the issue. Wigneswaran is also reported to have sought US assistance to investigate the issue but the US had turned down the request. The Northern Province Chief Minister said that he has advised doctors in the North to look into the issue and submit a report. Father of accused ISIL member Jack Letts challenges Andrew Scheer to a

Courtesy of John Letts/File Undated photo of John Letts with his son Jack. The father of alleged ISIL member Jack Letts has challenged Andrew Scheer to a debate over his son’s fate.John Letts complained in a statement he released Thursday that Scheer has refused to meet with him, and instead is poisoning Canadians’ minds against the 24-year-old Muslim convert with false information. The case vaulted back to the fore this week after the U.K. stripped Letts – being held by Kurdish forces in northern Syria – of his British citizenship. Though Letts grew up in England, he was a joint U.K.-Canadian citizen, meaning now he holds only Canadian nationality. After news of the British decision broke, Scheer said any government he led would not “lift a finger” to bring the man British media nicknamed “Jihadi Jack” to Canada. Trudeau non-committal on blocking Jihadi Jack’s return, says only that it’s a crime to travel with terror motives Canada could ‘lead the world’ by bringing Jihadi Jack here to face justice, father says ‘I’ve always felt I am Canadian:’ Jihadi Jack hopes to take refuge in Canada Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has not stated directly whether his government would ever repatriate Letts.Story continues belowThis advertisement has not loaded yet,but your article continues below.“Mr. Scheer and his colleagues have continued to spread lies about our son in order to appear to be ‘tough on terrorism’,” said John Letts in a statement signed by him and wife Sally Lane. “Mr. Scheer knows that every time he calls our son ‘Jihadi’ Jack … he condemns him in the mind of those who are unable to distinguish between ‘fake news’ and the truth, and drives another nail into our son’s coffin.”He challenged Scheer or his colleagues to a debate “in public, in French or in English, at any time.”Daniel Schow, Scheer’s press secretary, said in a statement, “Mr. Scheer has made his position on Jihadi Jack crystal clear. He would not lift one finger to bring this self-described terrorist to Canada.”Letts said in an earlier interview he believes Conservative critics are willfully confusing his son with “Jihadi John,” the U.K.-media nickname for Mohammed Emwazi, an Arab-British ISIL member videotaped taking part in public beheadings.Jack Letts travelled to the Middle East in 2014 after converting to Islam, ending up in Raqqa, Syria, the de-facto capital of the short-lived ISIL caliphate. His parents say he grew to vehemently oppose the Islamic State and eventually escaped Raqqa, only to be captured by the Kurdish forces. He came to the British authorities’ attention after a post on Facebook saying he’d like to conduct a “martyrdom operation” against a school friend’s army unit. His parents contend his account was hacked. In a BBC-TV interview earlier this year, Letts said he was at one time “an enemy of Britain” and would have taken part in a suicide car bombing, but now believes such behaviour is forbidden by Islam. He said in another interview he deeply regrets traveling to ISIL territory.Thursday’s statement says that he has been kept in prison for over two years without charge and with no evidence he participated in violence.“He was never a fighter and did not go to Syria to fight for ISIS. Just because the tabloid media have made this claim for five years does not make it true.” read more

COP21 Ban announces Climate Action 2016 partnership to maintain momentum after UN

United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon announced today at the UN climate change conference (COP21) that a broad group of organizations will partner in 2016 to maintain momentum for multi-stakeholder climate implementation. “I am heartened by the significant and growing coalitions that are emerging to tackle the challenges of climate change and realize new opportunities,” Mr. Ban underlined at the global event taking place in Paris, on a day dubbed “Action Day.” “I am pleased to be joined by so many key partners to scale climate action efforts and make them sustainable,” he added. The Secretary-General, joined by groups such as the World Bank, the Global Environment Facility and the Compact of Mayors, and individuals including Michael Bloomberg – the UN Secretary-General’s Special Envoy for Cities and Climate Change – will co-sponsor a “Climate Action 2016” summit of leaders from government, business, cities and localities, civil society and academia next 5 and 6 May in Washington, D.C. According to a press release issued by the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) – the organizer of the conference – this high-level gathering will complement ongoing implementation efforts and catalyze actionable, concrete deliverables in specific high-value areas, including: cities; land use; resilience; energy; transport; tools for decision makers; and finance. “[The summit will] show that the things that were talked here in Paris are actually happening on the ground,” Bob Orr, a Special Adviser to the Secretary-General on climate change, told the UN News Centre in an interview.“The number and the depth of the coalitions that are organized to deliver action on climate whether through forestry, through industry, through cities, all the different channels need to move forward as far and as fast as they can,” he added. “So the Secretary-General is not only ensuring we have this robust universal agreement, but that we have the coalition in the field to deliver the goods.”Mr. Orr noted that the meeting is taking place in the United States’ capital as all the partners joining the Secretary-General at the 2016 summit agreed that Washington, D.C. is the “best stop” as it is home to a number of important international institutions and financing vehicles.Meanwhile, the world’s attention is turned towards the Paris-Le Bourget site north-east of the French capital, where government representatives have been meeting since Monday to reach a new universal climate agreement to limit global temperature rise to below two degrees Celsius. read more

More time agreed for buffer zone to spare three million Syrian civilians

Speaking to journalists in Geneva after a meeting of the International Syria Support Group’s Humanitarian Access Task Force, Jan Egeland expressed “relief” that further violence in the north-west of the country had been averted, so far.“The Russian and the Turkish side have indicated that indeed more time will be given to implement the agreement,” Mr Egeland said, in his capacity as Senior Advisor to the UN Special Envoy for Syria, Staffan de Mistura, who announced his resignation on Wednesday. The big battles have ended in most of the country (but Idlib) could still become the worst battle yet – Jan Egeland, Humanitarian Adviser”Some of the first deadlines have passed … there will be more time for diplomacy and that is a great relief to us,” he said, adding that “if one is to follow a military logic that has too often been followed in this war alone, it would be horrific news for civilians”.After more than seven years of fighting that has left hundreds of thousands of Syrians dead, uprooted millions more and enmeshed the interests of several foreign powers, Mr. Egeland stressed the value of the current deal between Russia and Turkey, who are the guarantors of a proposed demilitarized zone in Idlib. “We have now had five weeks without any air raids,” he said. “I can’t remember such a period for the last three years in Idlib. It’s a calm through this very sensitive, complex, difficult area full of three million civilians. It is a welcome calm.”In addition to opposition groups, some three million people live in Idlib, along with 12,000 humanitarian workers. Many people are there after fleeing other areas of Syria which have been reclaimed by Government forces; most recently the provinces of Dar’a and Quneitra in the south-east, as well as Eastern Ghouta, on the outskirts of Damascus.“The big battles have ended in most of the country” but Idlib “could still become the worst battle yet”, Mr Egeland said.He explained that even if the opposition groups including Al-Nusra withdrew their heavy weapons from the contact line, they would “of course” embed themselves in built-up areas of Idlib, leaving “a million civilians engulfed” in conflict.“This is a fantastic deal so far because it prevents bloodshed, it has to continue like that,” he insisted. While the eyes of the international community remain fixed on Idlib, there is still tremendous suffering in many areas of Syria, including in the east of the country, Mr Egeland stressed.“There is horrific fighting that nobody seems to be caring about in the east, with 15,000 people in crossfire between Islamic state fighters and the attacking forces,” he said, stressing that although war is ending “in more and more provinces”, peace can only be built through human rights and the implementation of rule of law.Egeland to follow de Mistura, and leave post next monthAfter coordinating the UN’s efforts to deliver humanitarian aid to Syria for more than three years, liaising with the Government of Syria and the international community over safe passage for aid convoys across front lines and borders, Mr Egeland also announced that it was time for him to step down.Mirroring Staffan de Mistura, Special Envoy for Syria, who made a similar announcement on Wednesday at UN headquarters in New York, Mr Egeland said that he would be leaving his post at the end of November.  “It’s been very exhausting really…there hasn’t really been an evening or a weekend where we have not been dealing with an Aleppo, Homs, Dera’a, Eastern Ghouta, now Idlib, Rukban or some other issues,” he said. “So that’s the issue, and I presume I will be replaced by somebody better and that they will continue with a Task Force because the job is not even half done.” read more

In their haste, though, all of those people that upgraded may have missed that the upgrade is permanent. Once you upgrade, there’s no going back.Apple’s new OS isn’t a Windows Vista-style situation, where you upgrade only to find that your new operating system is going to make you wish you never owned a computer in the first place. For the most part, it works just fine, and even has a bunch of nifty little hidden features throughout. However, the aesthetic of the OS is completely different, moving from skeuomorphism to large skinny text and flat colors. To some people, the visual style and new animations are too drastic, so a rollback to iOS 6 would be more pleasing on the eyes. Unfortunately for that subset of people, once you go iOS 7, you never go back.People got the idea in their head of downgrading to iOS 6 during the iOS 7 beta, which allowed users testing the beta to do so. Apple stopped signing iOS 6 installations, which means if you try to install it, you’ll be greeted with an iTunes error. If you tried to downgrade and now your phone is acting wiggy, just restore the phone back to iOS 7, and learn to love Apple’s Lisa Frank version of an operating system. All those bright colors will put you in a good mood next time you scowl at your iPhone screen.last_img read more

Howe backs Defoe for the England squad

first_imgEddie Howe has been amazed by Jermain Defoe’s contribution and he believes that the Englishman would be the right choice for Gareth Southgate in the England squad for the upcoming World Cup in Russia. The Bournemouth coach insisted that the experienced striker can be what the squad exactly needs – the player that they can rely on and he won’t disappoint them under any circumstances. The talented British manager spoke about Defoe as he said, according to Sky Sports:“When he came on the pitch, he was bright, he gave us a lift and when that one moment came, I said after the game you wouldn’t want anyone else on that chance. It was high class.”Jadon Sancho, Borussia DortmundCrouch: Liverpool could beat Man United to Jadon Sancho Andrew Smyth – September 14, 2019 Peter Crouch wouldn’t be surprised to see Jadon Sancho end up at Liverpool one day instead of his long-term pursuers Manchester United.“Certainly in terms of goal scoring and finishing he’s right up there. An incredible finisher. Even when he came here as an 18-year-old you could see straight away.”“One of the first sessions he did when he came on loan from West Ham was a finishing session and the lads literally stopped in awe at what they were seeing.”“I think age is irrelevant. I don’t think Gareth will look at the age at all. He’ll look at the player, his experience and what he can bring.”“That’s the beauty of Jermain, Gareth knows him inside out. There’ll be no risk attached to him.”last_img read more

Also passed that year, Measure L required that all citizens’ initiatives are voted on in November.Cate and Kersey said the June primary still disenfranchises November-only voters whose preferred candidate didn’t pass the June primary. They also said the primary creates an unnecessarily long and costly campaign cycle.Their potential replacements included ranked-choice voting or a top vote-getter system. The former, also called instant run-off voting, allows voters to rank candidates in order of preference until one secures a majority after several voting rounds. In a top vote-getter system, all candidates appear on the ballot, and whoever receives the most votes wins the election. KUSI Newsroom last_img read more
