THE rage over Ruby the elephant was finally settled. It may be hard to give up such a large asset, but officials did the right thing in making a Solomonic decision to heed the plea of animal advocates and retire the old girl from the Los Angeles Zoo to a pachyderm paradise in the Sierra foothills. The 46-year-old African elephant, captured as a baby, has lived her entire life on display at safaris, circuses and zoos. Animal lovers such as TV’s Bob Barker are helping pay the costs to house Ruby in her golden years as she tools around 125 acres of grassland out of the spotlight.
