“They had two big girls in the post. And we had to work hard all game long to contain them,” said Artesia coach Scott Rozcey. “We had to play a little better defense on them, especially in the second half. Our full-court pressure kind of wore them down. They couldn’t hit outside shots. They did score on the inside quite a bit.” Artesia (10-5, 4-0) jumped out to a 16-6 first-quarter lead and held a 30-19 advantage at intermission before the Eagles (11-8, 2-3) cut an 11-point deficit to seven points in the fourth quarter. Against a tall and very athletic Artesia team, the Glenn High girls basketball squad didn’t have a problem generating offense in the post or rebounding at either end of the court. Brandi Hood of Glenn turned in a typical performance for her, scoring 23 points and grabbing 17 rebounds. And her twin sister Champign had a solid performance with 11 points and eight rebounds. But the the Eagles simply couldn’t handle the Pioneers’ full-court pressure defense, committing 40 turnovers many unforced and in the second half, Artesia capitalized by turning a seven-point lead into a 63-44 route in a Suburban League game at home.
