Everton 3-1 BSC Young Boys (7-2): Toffees storm into Europa League last-16

first_img1 Everton ensured at least one British club progressed in to the Europa League last-16 with a ruthless 7-2 aggregate victory over BSC Young Boys. The Toffees dismantled their Swiss opponents 3-1 at Goodison Park, one week after their 4-1 win at the Stade de Suisse. The visitors made sure there would be a tension in the air – in the wake of defeats for Liverpool and Tottenham – when Sekou Sanogo opened the scoring on 13 minutes, profiting from a Tim Howard error with a close-range finish. But the goal seemed to kick-start Roberto Martinez’s side into gear, who levelled on 25 minutes when Romelu Lukaku converted from the spot after Steven Naismith was felled by Marco Wolfi. And the Belgium striker, who netted a hat-trick in the reverse fixture, was on target once more five minutes later with a controlled finish from Luke Garbutt’s sweeping cross.Darron Gibson’s defence-splitting pass freed Kevin Mirallas in behind the Young boys back-four for Everton’s third, the winger making no mistake with a composed strike three minutes before the break. With the tie wrapped up, the Toffees were dealt an injury blow when Lukaku limped off holding his hamstring, but his replacement Arouna Kone almost added to Everton’s tally with a skidding effort driven against the woodwork.
