Construction for new Vandenburgh is set to begin in early March

first_imgby Tracy McCue, Sumner Newscow — The long awaited Vandenburgh Avenue Improvement Project is about to become a reality when construction begins in the next couple of months. The Wellington City Council has approved a contract with Dondlinger & Sons Construction Company Inc. of Wichita to reconstruct Vandenburgh, a diagonal road that connects A Street on the north end to the U.S. 160/81 Pizza Hut intersection on the south end. The construction is expected to start in early March and be completed by September or October over a 160 working day schedule. The road will be inaccessible during the time of reconstruction. The intersection will be closed just south of the north entrance allowing for traffic on side streets in the area. It will be closed on the other end at the Pizza Hut intersection. The total cost of the project will be $2.12 million for a new highway and a 10-inch sewer line which will run parallel to the west side of the road. The cost to the city of Wellington will be $553,000.The road construction project is a split with the Kansas Department of Transportation, which will pay for 80 percent of the project. The other 20 percent will be paid by the city. The road bid was $1.894,931The city will pick up all of the water line project cost which is budgeted at $275,000.The new road will include two lanes, shoulders, and turn lanes in specific areas. The medians will also be taken out at the north edge of the project to make it easier for wide loads to get through. The construction of Vandenburg has been a long-time coming. Wellington council was discussing ways to improve the project since the 1990s. Close Forgot password? Please put in your email: Send me my password!
